What is a shellac manicure?

Shellac is a new type of "nail polish" that is being rated extremely highly in terms of the ease of application and flawless finish. A shellac manicure is completed much in the same way of a normal manicure, although UV lamps are used to set the polish. Shellac varnishes comes in a wide range of colours, and can of course be customised with nail art and accessories. Shellac is thought to be some sort of "hybrid" of the popular gel nail manicure, but the varnish is much thinner and is less harmful to your real nails.

How is a shellac manicure done?

A shellac manicure is much like a normal manicure with standard nail polishes. Your nails are trimmed and shaped, and tips can be applied if desired. A base coat is applied to your nails and cured under a UV lamp for 10 seconds. Two coats of colour follow the base coat, being cured by the UV lamp in between each for 2 minutes. A top layer is then applied and allowed to cure for another 2 minutes, and finally the nails are wiped with an alcohol based solution. It is an extremely quick process and provides you with natural looking nails with a flawless finish.

Shellac nails last for approximately 2 weeks and typically need to be redone when growth appears. Shellac is relatively easy to remove, but it is recommended that a professional nail technician does this by soaking a strong acetone based solution and wrapping your nails.
