What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment that originated in China, and has multiple benefits and can be used for many different reasons. Acupuncture generally consists of several weekly, or fortnightly sessions and most courses consist of up to 12 sessions.

Acupuncture is carried out by having disposable needles inserted in to acupuncture points on the body. The points needed are determined in an initial consultation with an acupuncturist. As each needle is inserted you can feel them, but initially without any pain. After the needle has been inserted and is at the right depth a deep aching sensation is felt, and sometimes the needles are heated, or stimulated with electricity.

Each acupuncture session lasts for around 20 minutes.

What is acupuncture used for?

The aim of acupuncture is stimulate the body's own healing response and restore natural balance. Acupuncture is used to treat many conditions ranging from acne and eczema to anxiety and insomnia. Acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular and has many health benefits including pain relief.
